This Thursday, November 10, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will be screening Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest as part of its Brooks Hours series. Directed by Michael Rapaport, the film takes a look at one of the most infulential groups in hip-hop; throughout 2008, Rapaport spent time traveling with Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White to film the highly anticipated documentary, which was released in July. Includes interviews from De La Soul, the Beastie Boys, Common, The Jungle Brothers, Pharrell, and Mos Def. Admission is $6 mem/$8 non-mem | Free with VIP Film Pass. Memphis, TN 38104 As a fan of A Tribe Called Quest and hip-hop in general, I hate that I missed the documentary when it was showing at Ridgeway 4 cinema this summer. During its productions and festival rounds, I’d heard about Q-Tip taking issue with some of the footage, so I was curious to see if the final product would be a romanticized review of their work and influence (they were perfect! they did no wrong) or would it be raw and truthful, showing the many sides of hip-hop (and why we love it).
