It’s been a while since I’ve been out to enjoy some live music, so I was stoked to head down to BB King’s on Beale Street to see The Black Cadillacs. A blues based indie rock band, their Feb 24th self-titled release includes a track titled Fracture (the last song on the EP) which was inspired by their travels to Memphis, TN last year. Members Will Horton, Matthew Hykra and Phillip Anderson formed the band here before moving to Knoxville for college a few years ago, so when they found themselves in need of a little inspiration to help them wrap up the project, a trip to the city was just what they needed. Now on tour, the TN Dept of Tourist Development invited them to be part of Southwest Airline’s #LiveAt35 Concert Series, a fun campaign tying music + travel together. Southwest has added nonstop flights from Dallas to Memphis, so during Tuesday’s flight, passengers were treated to a surprise acoustic set from the band. Once they landed (and after some food, obviously), they headed over to BB King’s for their performance. They put on such an amazing, energetic show, so it’s no surprise that they’re becoming a must-see at music festivals. Lead singer Horton works the stage while dancing and playing the tambourine with his perfectly in-tune bandmates. It’s indie rock for sure, but there’s a bluesy, underlying aggression to their sound, so it has heart and makes you want to jump around as well. I met them after the show and they’re a cool, laid-back crowd-a talented group of guys that just really love to make music.
