While I’ve always had dreams of owning a brightly hued couch, in reality my living spaces over the years have always remained neutral. It wasn’t in my budget to do a complete overall (so the couch would have to wait, lol), so I’d been collecting photos of various spaces for a little decor inspiration-I knew there were budget friendly things that I could do with my decor to give it a sense of newness, especially for Spring. Coincidentally, At Home, the Home Decor Superstore reached out about me doing a space refresh in my home, so I knew that it was time to get the ball rolling! When I first started shopping, I had a completely different idea in my mind. I knew I wanted color, but initially I was deadset on teal or lime green accents to really punch up the color in the room (way to go from 0-60 Kim, lol). When I started shopping, I initially picked up an accent piece that was teal, but the longer I shopped, the more I realized that my eyes kept zoning in on red and orange pieces. The main goal that I had was to incorporate some art onto the walls, and I’m a firm believer in going with your instincts when styling, so I started over and picked out my focal piece and built everything else around that. Before: After: I saw so many cool canvases, but I decided to play up the fact that my living room receives a ton of natural light and went with a floral number. It was bright but not overwhelming, and I knew that it would work well over both the couch or fireplace mantel, so I would have options if I want to rearrange things. I also picked up throw pillows in a dark red color to tie in the painting. They’re the same material as my couch so I knew it would work. I didn’t have a checklist, but after I picked out the canvas I knew that I needed to add in a little greenery; I don’t buy fresh flowers frequently enough to just pick up new vases, so I grabbed a potted bouquet of silk flowers and a plant to swap out with a more rustic one that was on my lamp’s shelf. I also picked up some faux bulbs to go into a bronzed vase that I owned so that each area (wall, coffee table, mantel) would have a common thread of color. BeforeAfter I’ve never used my fireplace (and probably never will), so I moved a thrifted wooden bin in front of it with a few favorite books. I wanted something to top it with and initially went with a gold paperweight. A versatile piece, I decided to play around with it on my mantel and left it there, so I just topped the books with a wooden vase. I really want a larger, wider wooden bin or bench though, so I’ll be back to the store soon, lol. For the mantel, I went back and forth with the floral canvas, 2 large framed images and a mirror, and ultimately decided to use the mirror to give the room a little more energy. New bookend Buddhas (I’m so obsessed with them), another silk flower and a few other previously owned items completed it. Sidenote: there are soooooooo many ways you can decorate your mantel. Seriously. Out of all of the changes I made, this took the longest, and I may even change it next week.) I also picked up another candle holder, 2 small vases, a silver catchall box and a Taibei Buddha head. Next on my list is a bar-cart and a horizontal bookcase so I wanted nice accent pieces that I could mix in with books and supplies. My living room feels a lot more put-together, and I’m happy that I was able to make small but significant changes at such an affordable rate (my total for everything was less than $150). While I could have planned things out a little more, part of the fun of shopping at At Home is getting lost in all of the fun decor. There’s so much to choose from (even furniture!) and it’s budget friendly. Stylish home decor at affordable prices is what it’s all about!
