Over the weekend, I stopped by my favorite patisserie 17 Berkshire for a GALentine’s Day popup event they were hosting with TCB Company, a local floral design and event planning company. Obviously I was there for the macarons and pretty blooms, but I also knew how busy it would be and so I wanted to capture some imagery for 17’s owner, Nuha. See, Nuha is one of my “gals”; we met through mutual work with CB years ago and while she has hired me to work on projects from time to time (like here), we’ve also been able to build a genuine friendship through our mutual respect for each other and our endeavors as creative entrepreneurs. While the pop-up was in preparation for the official GALentine’s Day on February 13th, seeing so many women come in together really made me think about the importance of finding time to hang with your girls and celebrate each other.
Drakes “No New Friends” may be a popular mantra to yell, but in reality, you most definitely have to make new friends, especially as women in this day and age. While you may have a core crew that you will always rock with, the only way that you can continue to grow and have new experiences is to be open to building new relationships with people. Making new friends can be hard, but hopefully, through hobbies or even work, you can connect with some new women and begin a real friendship. I have that core, but over the past 2 years I’ve also been lucky enough to have clients that turned into friends. Sure, we work hard and build each other up so that we can reach our goals, but we also try to do this life thing together when we have free time.
Look, you can have the best man in the world but you NEED your girls! Sex and the City wasn’t just popular because of their style and crazy dating lives-the dynamics of their friendships reflected real life and showed how important it is to have friends that you lean on during the good, the bad and the ugly. Don’t let shyness or unfamiliar settings stop you from being open to fostering new connections. Not all will be great, but at least you will try!
So whether it’s going to events as a crew or simply grabbing a cup of coffee and being a sounding board when one of you need to vent, it’s absolutely necessary to get you a few gal pals that you can celebrate the big and little things with. This GALentine’s Day, take a moment to let your girls know that you care, and if you can get together (even if just for a hour), go and celebrate!
